CHICAGO'S FOOD DESERTS

My focused topic is about food deserts inhabiting the Chicago area. These food deserts have many negative effects on the families. Food deserts interest me because I have seen these food deserts in real life, and I want to know why there isn't more being done to minimize the issue. Throughout my research, I want to find out where and why food deserts in Chicago are so severe, by analyzing the inequality, health, and income factor. Food deserts are an important topic because families struggle every day to follow good nutrition with the limited food sources they have. My research question is, "What factors play specifically into Chicago's food deserts and why?" Some prior knowledge that I know about food deserts is that it is difficult to live in them, and the obesity rates in adults and children has risen a decent amount in past years due to limited healthy food resources.

RESEARCH PLAN

The sources that I will be using are scholarly articles, academic journals, and sections of books created from multiple authors. The sources I have found, are exactly what I wanted to find for my research. Each source has a unique perspective on a different factor that plays in Chicago food deserts. I am hoping to find more information about various causes and effects of food deserts, like obesity, limited food sources, etc. I will look for these sources through the library databases, because this will help me find credible sources to help provide evidence for my research on food deserts. I also will do some searching on other databases that I find. I am going to use the search terms "food deserts" "Chicago" "obesity" “inequality” and "health" to find the sources intended for my topic.

CHALLENGES

My research process may be difficult by different reasons. Making sure sources are credible and aren't biased, is definitely something I will have to look out for. I also think that finding sources specifically on food deserts in Chicago may be challenging; there might not be as many sources compared to just food deserts in general. I wanted to minimize my research to just focusing on Chicago because they are one of the most populated cities with food deserts. I don’t think any of my own bias will get in the way of my research search, because the topic isn’t very opinionative; it is just informational facts on a troubling topic. I will look for a source that may contradict my thesis by having something to do with

• ther people disagreeing on popular methods in the works for solving food deserts. The ways that I will

get over any of the challenges that I endeavor, is by double checking my sources and making sure they are credible and doing my best to do all that I can to find resources for my specific topic.

The first source I am presenting talks about how food deserts in Chicago have worsened over the years and through studies being done, they found that supermarkets have not benefited food deserts. The supermarkets opening, are too far from food

perked my interest by the information that Bauld presented about Chicago food deserts. He talks about how limited food resources are for food deserts and talks about how the irony of

as low-income areas. Bauld also brings up the inequality factor, by portraying the binary that is present within food deserts.

This second source is about examining families’ socio-economical background and race involved with inhabiting food deserts. I chose this as my second favorite source because it brings a completely different perspective on food deserts. By different perspective, I am talking about the inequality factor that plays an important role in Chicago food deserts. Block talks about real life examples about how other people take advantage of minorities lack of the English

• language. Blocks raises important questions politically involving the

racial factor.

This last source is about the demographics and quantitative data found with food deserts and who it affects primarily. I chose this as my third favorite source because it was very eye opening to see that statistics provided and how many families are affected by food deserts in Chicago. The Illinois Advisory talks in depth about how African Americans are affected more than any other ethnicity.
