E-Prescribing 2015
Effective March 27, 2015, Physicians will be required to “e-prescribe” both controlled and non-controlled medications. Can be accomplished through EMR applications or via a “standalone” system EMR or standalone systems MUST be certified by Surescripts, the national prescription-routing network

You must check to make sure your EMR is certified by Surescripts AND that it meets the DEA’s EPCS (Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances) security requirements/certification

3 Step Process:
1) “Identity proofing” - vendor verifies who
you are including:
Verifying your personal identity Knowledge based authentication Verification of account information – financial
2) “Two-factor authentication” – a credential
that establishes your electronic signature
Something you know – Password Some you have – digital token
Signing up with your e- prescribing vendor system
3) Access control setup – 2 person process
One individual for setting list of those authorized to prescribe and the prescriber to use his/her credentials to log in and activate system access
