This goal of this presentation is to provide Indiana teachers with the appropriate educational materials to meet: Education Article 30. Chapter 5. Mandatory Curriculum IC 20-30-5-16: Human Organ Program Instruction

Each school corporation shall include in the school corporation’s high school health education curriculum instruction regarding human organ donor program as adopted by the state board, including:

  • 1. The purpose of the human organ donor program
  • 2. The statewide and nationwide need for human organ donations
  • 3. The procedure for participation in the human organ donor program

  • Organ Donor - A person who died and was able to donate their organs to save up to eight lives

(Organs that can be transplanted include kidneys ( 2), lungs (2), heart, liver, pancreas and small intestine)

  • Tissue Donor - A person who died and was able to donate tissue grafts to provide healing for as many as 75 people

(Tissue transplants include bone grafts for cancer patients, skin grafts for burn victims, ligaments to restore mobility, heart valves for blood flow and corneas to restore sight)

  • Living Donor - A living person who chooses to donate one kidney or part of their liver, lung or pancreas to help someone waiting for a lifesaving

( A living donor can still lead an active healthy life)

  • Recipient - A person who receives the gift of an organ or tissue transplant from a donor hero
  • Transplant Waiting List - A national list of people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant
  • Recovery - A surgery to remove lifesaving organs and tissue grafts for transplantation
