The expectation of all RISD Fine Arts programs is to promote and maintain the widest possible participation with the highest possible standards. Our programs are designed to provide opportunities for students to achieve true mastery of content and to provide them experiences that allow them to leave RISD and have a positive impact on our society and their communities.

• Dallas Summer Musical Awards (DSM)
• Evaluates all musical programs across North Texas and

hosts a “Red Carpet Event” that mirrors The Oscars.

• Over the 2015-2016 seasons, RISD schools have been

nominated for 48 different awards

• In recent years, RISD schools have won Best Musical, Best

Supporting Actor, Best Actress, Best Featured Actress, Best Featured Actor, Best Ensemble, Best Scenic Design, Best Tech Execution, and over $20,000 in fine arts scholarships through this program.

ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS

• RISD provides the more expensive band and orchestra

instruments (cello, string bass, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor and baritone saxophone, tuba, baritone, and percussion). Students pay a $100 fee to cover maintenance and repairs. The fee is payable in installments over the year and waived for students who show a true need.

• RISD Fine Arts has consistently utilized bond funds to

purchase quality used instruments that RISD students typically buy themselves – flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, and

• trombones. These instruments are used as rental instruments

across RISD for students in need.

ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS

• Beginning in Fall 2008, RISD established an instrument rental

plan from a local vendor that does not require a credit check, as many of these parents operate exclusively in cash.

• Fine Arts performance attire (uniforms, etc.) is provided by

RISD bond money. For the first time ever, all students in grades 7-12 who are in band/choir/orchestra will be provided proper formal concert attire to look their very best.

ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS

• All RISD fine arts programs are no-cut; however, we do

place students in ability-grouped classes at the secondary

• level. This facilitates individual and group achievement in

a team environment.

• Many aspects of our secondary fine arts programs have

participation by all students together – marching band, select choir performances, and select orchestra performances.

ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS

• All RISD music booster clubs offer a private lesson

scholarship program to economically disadvantaged students.

• All RISD fine arts booster clubs provide payment plans for

families in need.

• All programs are allowed opportunities to evaluate family

needs and make informed decisions to benefit the child.

• To remain competitive in the marketplace, we will benchmark

stipends and staff allocations against neighboring districts and make recommendations for the 2017-2018 budget.

PRIORITY #1 - STAFFING

• Continue to attract and retain the very best Fine Arts staff by:
• Providing them the resources they need to engage, educate,

and retain students and to help those students achieve at the highest level possible both individually and collectively.

• Remain competitive with our benchmark districts.
• Continue to grow the JH band, choir, and orchestra staffing as

enrollment grows.

• Continue to evaluate work loads of all staff so that they feel

like they are able to serve their kids at the highest level possible.
