Strategic Vision 2018 - 2020

An Overview

slide-14
SLIDE 14

FOCA’s Dual Personality:

Water Quality & Environmental Issues Financial (Pocket-book) Issues

“focus on back-to-basics issues: water quality, environment, stewardship responsibilities.”

> Invasive species > Septic systems

“lobby on provincial issues – anything that is too much for a little association!”

> Taxation > Rural utilities

Asian Carps

Asian carps were brought to North America in the 1970s. Since their introduction, they have migrated north through U.S. waterways towards the Great Lakes. Preventing Asian carps from entering the Great Lakes is the best way to protect native fish populations.

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Why is FOCA Concerned / What are the Threats

Physical Threat

The vibration of boat propellers can make Silver Carp jump up to 3 metres out of the water

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et99O-rO7Gk

Ecological Threat

Asian carps eat up to 20% of their body weight a day, which threatens the food supply for native fish populations

Socio-economic Threat

A decline in native fish species could damage Ontario’s commercial and sport fishing industries

What FOCA Members Can Do

 Never buy or keep live Asian carps.  Do not introduce live fish into Ontario lakes or rivers.  If you have any information about the illegal importing, distribution or sale of live Asian carp, report it immediately to the MNRF TIPS line.  Educate your members about Asian carp!  Learn how to identify Asian carps and how to prevent the introduction or spread of these

unwanted species.  If you believe you’ve seen an Asian carp or other invasive species in the wild, please contact the toll-free Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711, or visit EDDMapS Ontario to report a sighting.  Write a letter to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Minister

  • f the Environment to request action

to stop this invasive fish from entering the Great Lakes.  Visit Asiancarp.ca for resources and information.
