What is a wave?

  • A wave is equal parts conversation

and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

  • A wave is shared. Any participant can

reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

  • A wave is live. With live transmission

as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real- time.

What makes wave interesting for use in labs?

  • Google created an powerful API witch makes it

easy to write „robots“. These can be used to communicate with bioinformatical software or even with machines in the lab in a very simple and natural way.

  • There is a „playback“-function witch allows you to

review all the changes that were made in the past. That should really help you writing the lab journal.

  • You can work together in real-time, no matter

where you are.

Example

Alice has extracted some DNA and now wants to identify it.

  • 1. She puts it in a sequencer. The sequencer is linked to a Wave-Robot,

who sends a wave with the electropherogram to Alice when ready.

Sequenzer – Alice

  • 2. Alice invites a Robot who reads the DNA-sequence of the

pherogram.

Sequenzer – Alice - Seqreader ...GCTGATCTGCGATCGACTCCG...

  • 3. She now want to look for ORF: She invites ORFfinder.

... - Alice - ORFfinder ...GCTGATCTGCGATCGACTCCG... ORFfinder: No ORF found.

  • 4. Alice has no clue what to do now,

so she invites Bob to the Wave.

... - Alice – ORFfinder - Bob Alice: Hey, what to do now? Bob: Why dont we BLAST it anyway?

  • 5. Bob invites a BLASTrobot...

... - Alice – ORFfinder – Bob - Blast

  • 6. ...who sees the sequence, does a

BLAST-search and answers...

Blast: See Result of Blast-search at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/...
