Group Presentation Assignment: 25% of final grade Multicultural Ethics

The class is divided into four groups. Each group will be responsible for conducting class on a particular day toward the end of the semester. What you will be teaching the class is explained below. The group will receive a grade, and that grade is worth 25% of your overall grade. This is a very large portion of your final grade, so be sure to read and understand this assignment very well. Also be sure to ask me if you have any questions. Be assured that you will have multiple classes devoted to group preparation (in-class time to work as a group). However, it is most likely that you will also need to meet outside of class as well (in person or via some online tool such as Skype). The Course Schedule at the end of the Syllabus indicates the day your group will present. You will have 5-10 minutes at the beginning of class to finalize your preparation and set up anything you need. Therefore, your group will need to teach and present to the class for 40 minutes.

In class, we have explored the general ethical framework for Confucianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and

• Islam. We have also gained an overview of some of the problems involved in issues such as immigration,

human rights, and war/violence/terrorism. Your group has been assigned one of the four ethical frameworks listed above. Your group will take your assigned ethical system and apply it 2 of the 3 ethical issues. You can pick which two you want to cover. Each group must:  Turn in a typed copy of your Team Charter (with signatures)  Teach the class on your assigned day  Turn in a bibliography of works consulted  Turn in an outline of the presentation  Turn in 4 questions relating to your presentation suitable to appear on the Final Exam. Each member of the group must:  Turn in a peer evaluation  Turn in a self-assessment

2 Team Charter The Team Charter is very important. How you structure your group, and the decisions you make regarding responsibilities and penalties, will have a large impact on how easy or difficult the preparation will be, and also on each member’s grade. You have received other instructions regarding the Charter. Presentation Guidelines: On Angel, be sure to look at the resources available under the Lessons tab. In the Readings folder, there are separate folders for each of the 3 ethical issues. In those folders you will also find a document that specifies the resources made available to you on Angel, in the Course Reader, in the Library, and online. Based on your research and interests, your group will choose how to cover your material. For instance, will you stay on the general level regarding your ethical theory? Or will you present some more detailed views on the particular branches of that ethical framework? (For example, will you go into the differences between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism?) You need to do more than simply repeat what we have already said in class. Your group must do research and engage in independent thinking in order to apply your ethical framework to the two ethical issues you

• cover. There must be a teaching component, so that the class learns things from your presentation that

they did not know beforehand. The class must meet for the entire time; you cannot let class out early. While you can divide the responsibilities among group members, you must work together. Make the presentation look unified—not like separate presentations put together. Everyone must present. Organize your thoughts by putting together an outline. Consider what the best ways of presenting the material might be. Create a presentation. The format is open. PowerPoint is one option, but there are other ways. You can include skits, videos, and the like, which can be very effective. You may also want to pass out some sort

• f handout to the class.

Try to engage the class. Be ready to ask engaging questions and to call on students to respond to the

• material. Be sure to cultivate participation to interact with your classmates.

Create an activity to use during class to test their understanding of your presentation. Make sure you test any equipment you will be using prior to your presentation date. You might want to arrive early on your day to prepare so that you can start on time. You should have a back-up plan in case something fails or someone does not show up. Have fun and make it fun. How much you and your audience enjoy these presentations depends on the effort you put into them. It’s your choice. Be as creative as you want to be. Just make sure you don’t sacrifice content for humor or flash. Find a balance.

3 Dos & Don’ts

• Do remember to cite your sources as you speak. Do diversify your sources by using a variety of them.
• Don’t create a visual aid that is hard to read or see. Do create a visual aid that helps you make a point.

Don’t expect the visual aid to speak for itself. Do reference the visual aid in your speech and consider the best time to disclose it.

• Do make sure every member of your team presents and give approximately equal presentation time to

each group member.

• Do practice your presentation to adjust cadence, speed, etc. Don’t do a presentation that is shorter than

the requirement.

• Don’t forget to ask questions if you want clarification. Do seek help if you need it.

Grades Grades will be based on how well the group meets the criteria listed on this sheet. Each member of the group will receive the same grade unless there is compelling reason to do otherwise. There are two main ways that grades can be adjusted: (1) a team decision based on the team charter (based on how you decide to handle differing levels of engagement, absences, etc.), or (2) my decision after reading through all of the Peer Evaluations and Self-Assessments. Peer Evaluation and Self-Assessment Each member of the group will individually complete both a Peer Evaluation and a Self-Assessment. These need to be typed, and they can be on the same document. These will be confidential. They are due on the class day after your group’s presentation. Peer Evaluation You must list each member of your group. For each member, you need to provide me with your evaluation of their work and contribution to the team’s work throughout the semester and during the group’s presentation. After describing and evaluating each member in your own words, I also want you to answer the following questions for each group member:  In my opinion, this member:

Self-Assessment You must also provide me with your assessment of your own work and contribution to the team throughout the semester and during the group’s presentation. Describe and assess your experience with this group assignment. What were you responsible for? How much work did you put in? Also describe what you have learned from your experience as a part of this group. Were you able to develop research skills? Communication skills? Did you come to a better understanding of the material? Do you believe you learned how to effectively (and ethically!) interact and cooperate with

• thers?
