Extra Costs

Some instruments require incidental items such as extra reeds for clarinet and saxophone, oil for brass instruments, rosin and shoulder rest for violins and violas. Teachers will guide you to appropriate selections. A music stand is needed for home practice. Inexpensive, folding stands are most common. Most rental programs include one. A lesson book (about $10) will be supplied or purchased via a local

  • vendor. The music stores know which method book your child will
  • need. Some rental plans include the lesson book as part of a package.

Method Books

Your instrument vendor will know which book to buy. For Orchestra at ALL schools: Essential Elements for Strings For Band at HO, FT, MN, GW, and PF: Essential Elements for Band (Percussion at only GW and PF should buy Alfred drum instead) For Band at CS, EP, and RP: Standards of Excellence Enhanced

Practice

"We are what we repeatedly do. Therefore, excellence is not an act, but a habit." -Aristotle Consider it another homework assignment. Take a look at the time available to your child during their time at home each day and schedule a practice time. CHALLENGE: make an effort to practice every day for the first three

  • weeks. Habits, good or bad, are formed in this amount of time.

We want your child to be responsible not only to themselves, but to the other members of their ensemble.
