A s a r u l e , s e v e r e p a i n o c c u r r e d i n p a t i e n t s w i t h c h e s t w a l l i n v o l v e m e n t . P l e u r i t i c c h e s t p a i n w a s a r a r e o c c u r ­ r e n c e . W h e e z e a s a p r e s e n t i n g s y m p t o m o c c u r r e d i n l e s s t h a n o n e p e r c e n t o f t h e p a t i e n t s a n d u s u a l l y w a s r e l a t e d t o a t u m o r w h i c h h a d e x t e n d e d t o t h e m a i n b r o n c h u s , c l o s e t o t h e m a i n c a r i n a . 2 . With an abnormality detected on a chest

roentgenogram made for routine purposes, but without symptoms.

T h i s o c c u r r e d i n 1 5 t o 2 5 p e r ­ c e n t o f t h e p a t i e n t s u n d e r g o i n g p u l m o n a r y r e s e c ­ t i o n . 3 . With symptoms of extension of bronchial

carcinoma such as cerebral or osseous metas- tases, hoarseness, jaundice, superior vena caval

• bstruction, or dysphagia, but without symptoms
• f a pulmonary disorder. A p p r o x i m a t e l y f i v e p e r ­

nonspecific symptoms such as anorexia, weight loss, fatigue, and dyspepsia. T h e

a n a s s o c i a t e d a b n o r m a l i t y o n t h e c h e s t r o e n t g e n ­

• g r a m , b u t d i d n o t h a v e a s s o c i a t e d r e s p i r a t o r y

s y m p t o m s . T h i s g r o u p r e p r e s e n t e d a b o u t f i v e to t e n p e r c e n t o f t h e p a t i e n t s . 5 . With neural or humoral manifestations such

as hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy, myopathy, (myasthenia-like syndrome and poly­ myositis), migratory thrombophlebitis, Cushing syndrome, hypercalcemia, hypoglycemia, and pe­ ripheral neuropathy, or with other unusual mani­ festations such as spontaneous pneumothorax, exacerbation of diabetes mellitus, or recurrence of inguinal hernia.
