Migration with Sayyiduna Ibrahim

  • Sayyiduna Lut migrated with Sayyiduna Ibrahim from

Baabil to Harraan and then from Harraan to Egypt.

  • Sayyiduna Sarah was also with them from Harraan.

They all came to Palestine from Egypt. From Egypt Sayyidah Hajir was now also with the group.

  • Thereafter, Sayyiduna Lut arrived at a city that was

approximately eighteen miles away from the city of Sayyiduna Ibrahim in order to propagate the teachings

  • f Islam.
  • The name of the city was Sodom. In the Holy Qur’an,

this place has been described as Al Mu-tafikah (the

  • verturned city) (Ruh-ul-Ma’ani Vol; 11 page 152)

The disgraceful behaviour of this nation

  • “And We rescued Lut when he said to his people,

“You indeed commit the shameful; such that no

  • ne in the creation has ever done before you.

What! You commit the immoral with males, and cut off the roads, and you speak evilly in your gatherings?” So his people had no answer except to say, “Bring the punishment of Allah upon us if you are truthful!” Surah Al ‘Ankaboot 29:28-29

The bad habits of this nation

  • Homosexuality
  • Sitting in the pathways – hindering travellers
  • Forcefully carrying out indecent acts against travellers
  • Robbing people
  • Killing people
  • Playing with pigeons and gambling
  • Men would colour their hands with henna
  • Throwing stones around and shooting pebbles to trouble passers by
  • They would slap each other across the face needlessly
  • They would expose their body in public for amusement
  • When joking, they would swear at each other and make lewd comments

The wife of Sayyiduna Lut

  • Sayyiduna Lut’s wife was called Waahilah. She

was a disbeliever. She had hypocrisy within her heart. She would not fulfil promises. She would inform the nation of Lut in relation to the guests who would visit him. She would thus betray Sayyiduna Lut. She would be pleased with the evil acts of the nation and was thus punished with the nation.

The visit of the Angels

  • The Angels who had visited Sayyiduna Ibrahim in order

to give Sayyiduna Sarah the glad tidings of Sayyiduna Ishaq and Sayyiduna Ya’qub also came to punish the nation of Sayyiduna Lut.

  • These angels came in human form. Sayyiduna Ibrahim

was very passionate about hosting guests. Since fifteen days, no guest had been. Therefore Sayyiduna Ibrahim quickly placed a calf before them. When Sayyiduna Ibrahim saw that these people were strangers whose heads were not even reaching the food, he realised that they were actually Angels.

What fear did Sayyiduna Ibrahim have when the Angels arrived

  • ‘He therefore inwardly sensed fear of them..”

Surah Adh Dhaariyaat 51:28

  • From the above it seems that Sayyiduna Ibrahim did not become aware that they

were Angels. Sayyiduna Ibrahim became frightened upon viewing them to be

  • strangers. It seems he was not aware of who they were and where they had come

from.

  • This matter is clarified in ‘At-Taweelaat An-Najmiyyah’ in which it is stated that the

fear of Sayyiduna Ibrahim was not due to general human fear caused by fear for

  • himself. When he was thrown with a catapult into fire, he did not fear upon

himself and he said, “I have submitted to the Lord of the Creation.” His fear was

  • nly fear out of mercy and kindness for his nation which is proven by their

statement. Marginal Notes (Hashiyah) upon Jalalain

  • Al ‘Allamah Al Aaloosi Al Baghdadi preferred the statement that Sayyiduna Ibrahim

recognised the Angels but his fear was in relation to the cause for their descent – lest they punish his nation. Ruh ul Ma’ani Volume 7 Page 97

Sayyiduna Ibrahim’s discussion about the nation of Sayyiduna Lut

  • ‘And when Ibrahim’s fear abated and the glad tidings reached him, he

argued with Us regarding the people of Lut.’ Surah Hud 11:74

  • The questions and answers of Sayyiduna Ibrahim with the Angels was not

an argument in essence. It was only an argument in terms of its appearance.

  • Sayyiduna Ibrahim said to the Angels, “Will you destroy an area in which

there are three hundred believers?’’ The Angels replied that they would never do that. Sayyiduna Ibrahim asked, ‘’Will you destroy that nation in which there are two hundred believers?’’The Angels replied that they would not do that. Sayyiduna Ibrahim asked whether they would destroy a nation in which there were forty believers. The Angels replied that they would not. Sayyiduna Ibrahim asked if the Angels would destroy a nation in which there were ten believers. The Angels replied that they would not do so. Sayyiduna Ibrahim then stated, ‘’Will you destroy a nation in which there was even one believer.” The Angels replied that they would not.

Sayyiduna Ibrahim’s discussion about the nation of Sayyiduna Lut (Cont’d)

  • ‘He said, “Lut is in it!”

Surah Al Ankaboot 29:32

  • ‘’We will save Lut and his family except for his

wife who will be punished along with the nation.” Tafsir Jalalain pg 186

Arrival of Angels to Sayyiduna Lut

  • ‘And when Our Angels came to Lut, he was distressed

for them and was disheartened due to them, and said, “This is a day of great hardship.” And his people came running towards him; and they were in the habit of committing evil deeds, he said, “O my people! These women of the tribe are my daughters – they are purer for you. Therefore fear Allah and do not disgrace me in the midst of my guests; is there not even a single righteous man among you?” They said, “You know that we have no right to the daughters of your tribe ; and

  • bviously you know what we desire.” He said, “If only I

had the strength against you or were able to get the refuge of some strong support!” Surah Hud 11:77-80

slide-11
SLIDE 11

The refuge of the strong support

  • “If only I had the strength against you or were able to

get the refuge of some strong support!” Surah Hud 11:80

  • The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah

be upon him) stated, “Allah bless Lut, he wished to take refuge in a strong pillar.”

  • Commenting on this Hadeeth, Mulla Ali Al Qari stated,

“Human nature necessitates that a human being inclines towards seeking assistance from a strong tribe in relation to some necessary matters.’’ Mirqaat-ul-Mafaateeh, Baabu Bad’-il-Khalq Wa dhikr-il- Ambiya.

The Response of the Angels to Sayyiduna Lut

  • ‘The Angels said, “O Lut! We are the sent ones of your

Lord – they cannot get to you, therefore during the night take your entire household with you – and not

  • ne of you may turn around and see – except your

wife; she too will be afflicted with the same as they will be; indeed their promise is at morn; is not the morning imminent?” So when Our command came, We turned that township upside down and showered it continuously with stones of fired clay. That are marked, in the custody of your Lord; and those stones are not at all far from the unjust! Surah Hud 11: 81-83

slide-13
SLIDE 13

The destruction of this nation

  • The Angels were watching the scene silently when the nation came to Sayyiduna

Lut with its bad intentions in relation to the guests they perceived to be human beings.

  • When the disrespect of these disgraceful people reached its limit, the Angels

spoke saying, “O Lut! Do not be agitated. Open the door and let these mockers come forth. We are not boys who they can crush. We are the Angels sent by Allah the Almighty. We have been sent to turn these areas upside down. When part of the night passes by, depart from this place along with your family. Your wife will not be able to go with you. Her result will be the same as the criminals. The chances given to this nation have expired. The morning is awaited and the commencement of the morning is not far.”

  • When the punishment arrived, the areas of the nation were completely
  • annihilated. Their sky scrapers were reduced to rubble. Such a powerful shower of

stones was thrown upon them that they all became black soil.

  • There were four areas in which they resided. These areas were located in the place

where the dead sea is located today which is also known as the sea of Lut. Even today clouds of smoke rise out of the dead sea and there are many earthquakes there.

The departure of Sayyiduna Lut during the night

  • Sayyiduna Lut departed during the night with his family

apart from his wife. Allah the Almighty folded the land and thus Sayyiduna Lut reached Sayyiduna Ibrahim.

  • Sayyiduna Jibril carried all the areas on his wing.

Sayyiduna Jibril raised the area so high that the dwellers of the sky could hear the voices of the chickens of the areas and their dogs. The areas were then overturned and thrown down. The nation was completely annihilated by the showers of bricks that followed. Ruh ul Ma’ani Vol 7 Part One Page 113
