The Pilot training held at the Turin School for the Deaf within the framework of the vocational activities for young deaf and young deaf with multi-impairement (age within 16 to 26) and 2 blind persons.

13 deaf students some of them with additional problems such us autism or mental retardation 2 blind students

The students are divided in 3 groups:

  • deaf students
  • deaf students with other kind of

impairements

  • blind students

with at least two mentorsfor each lesson

  • The main mentor is Marianna Luca
  • The second mentor (Luisa Accardo or Enrico

Dolza) is needed

  • to help and support the activities
  • to manage the documentation
  • to cope individual difficulties and to

evaluate the application

General remarks on the application The application is working well but still needs to the interventation of a mediator

For example:

  • 1. Signs are very specific and some of them are

not existing in the sign language, so we had to find

  • Visual metaphors or
  • Invent signs or
  • Using finger spelling

And the result of this is that many concepts, words, tools, materials, even when signed and translated, need to be explained at the beginning of the lesson

  • 2. The text are quite difficult and they need to be

read, explained and seen (in sign language) at least two or three times to be undestood, because they have many informations and the kind of information is quite technical. Infact the reading of the text cannot be simultaneous of the vision of the sign language translation.
