6 Ice breaker

  • 1. Divide into pairs/groups of three
  • 2. Your assignment is to find ten things you have in

common, with every other person in the group, that have nothing to do with work. One person must take notes and be ready to read their list to the whole group upon completion

  • f the assignment.
  • 3. Each group shares their whole list with the whole group.

10 What do student reps do?

  • Advocate on behalf of students (e.g. for improved facilities,

support, services)

  • Arrange monthly professional development sessions
  • Organise monthly social drinks/events
  • Run the Shut Up and Write group

slide-11
SLIDE 11

11 Monthly PD

  • Organised by students, for students
  • Topics can be suggested to reps (e.g. last session was

requested by a student on ‘Dealing with critical feedback’

14 Shut Up and Write When?

  • Alternating Tuesdays, 10am-11am (or stay until seminar)

Where?

  • Tutorial room 8, Level 5, Alfred Centre

What?

  • Students bring whatever they're working on and work at

the same time, with a timer going for 25 minutes

  • No phones, no Facebook, no reading the news.
  • When the timer stops, you've got a few minutes to chat

with the people around you and meet people

  • The timer starts again for another 25 minutes and

everyone is back working.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Shut Up and Write activity We’ll start the timer and you write down as many different questions that you might have about doing a PhD (5-10 mins)

Common areas:

  • Managing workload and stress
  • Time commitment
  • Getting paid work
  • Short courses and PD
  • Supervisory issues
  • Time management
  • Support services
  • Facilities/support at Alfred

16 Writing group (alternate Tuesdays) When?

  • Alternating Tuesdays, 10:30am-12pm

Where?

  • Tutorial room 8, Level 5, Alfred Centre

What?

  • Led by our Learning Skills Adviser Tomas Zahora
  • A group of students aiming to improve their writing
  • Involves learning about writing styles and technique (with

practise applying them) e.g. active vs. passive voice

  • Can submit drafts to group or to Tomas for feedback
slide-17
SLIDE 17

17 Why do we run these groups?

  • It can be really easy to feel isolated during your PhD
  • These groups are a chance to debrief – many students

encounter the same issues

  • Greater student social cohesion has been shown to assist

students in managing their project/supervisory issues

  • Because you need to find time to relax (a little)

  • We reps are happy to hear from you if you need advice
  • We can also help refer you on to the appropriate person if

you’re struggling – it may be Liz/Natalie, MPA, or a Monash-based service

  • Contact us any time at sphpm-doctoral-reps@monash.edu

(Or reply to one of our weekly emails that we send out)

  • Look out for the annual student needs assessment

survey and please take the time to answer it

  • If you have an idea for a professional development

session, please also let us know! Who do I go to if I need help!
