The Driving Force for Hybrid Ventilation.
The worldwide push to reduce fossil fuel consumption, and the move to higher usage
- f renewable energy sources, has led to an increased demand for natural ventilation
systems to replace traditional mechanical products. However, natural ventilation products, which traditionally use stack effect (ventilation chimneys), or stack and wind forces together (wind driven turbine ventilators), cannot be relied upon to always meet target flow rates at the desired time. And natural ventilators cannot perform against pressure drop greater than 3-5Pa. This means natural vents will not perform where sand trap louvres are the only source for air entry. There is a gap for something more reliable and with a capability to manage pressure losses. But for a recoverable capital cost and on-going low running cost (i.e. energy usage and maintenance).
The Innovative Development
Edmonds, an Australian business with over 80 years experience in natural ventilation products, took their wind driven Hurricane ventilator and added a specially designed e.c. motor in the head. Hurricane
Main patented feature: A motor for operation between a rotor connected to a wind driven ventilator and a stator mounted to the structure.
The Innovative Development
The Value of the Hybrid Innovation.
eco POWER hybrid technology offers:
- Capability to operate in natural wind mode or wind/mechanical.
- Best specific performance (cfm/W) ever recorded for a commercially available mechanical
device (∆p=0)
- Virtually inaudible operation in wind or mechanical modes.
- Unhindered performance in natural mode compared to equivalent unpowered product (i.e.
no reduction in Cd caused by presence of motor).
- No use of fan blades which reduce energy efficiency and create noise.
- Uses specially designed German e.c. motors.
- 0-10v control (or 4-20mA ) available for EP900 (must be programmed pre-sale).
- Power boost can respond to any digital measure such as CO2, VOC, NO, Temp,
Humidity, Anemometer.
- 200-277V AC 50/60Hz.
- Lightweight (constructed primarily from marine grade equivalent aluminium)
The Value of the Hybrid Innovation cont.
ecoPOWER hybrid technology offers:
- A guaranteed flow rate when it is needed. 3-4 times equivalent size Hurricane at Δp=0.
- An enhanced capacity to manage against pressure drop compared with wind ventilators. This leads to
need for less net-free inlet area which is a capital saving to offset the higher cost of ecoPOWER.

Value Towards LEED Points.
EcoPOWER, which can operate on wind and stack forces alone, and also in mechanical at the world’s best energy efficiency, can be a valuable contributor to LEED points when used alone or as part of a total ventilation system. EcoPOWER is consistent with the major objectives of LEED, namely:
- To have a positive impact on the health of building occupants (by facilitating inflow of
clean, fresh air).
- To save money (EcoPOWER has no operating cost in wind mode and an energy
efficiency in mechanical far lower than comparable size axial fans).
- To promote renewable, clean energy (Eco POWER can operate in natural mode and even
in mechanical mode the forces of the wind can reduce power consumption).
