Math Placement

SVMS Math Teacher

slide-48
SLIDE 48

The school district will place students in the appropriate level and additional placement testing and decision-making helps to make sure you are in the best-fit level.

Math 6: Regular/standard 6th Grade Math

(This course starts up from where you left off in grade 5 & is where most 6th graders are placed and has a good amount of rigor and will challenge student. This math places a student on a track to reach plenty of math to prepare the student for college.)

Pre-Algebra: Single Year Accelerated or 7th Grade Math

(This course is a typical 7th grade math course or a single acceleration; specific MAP and/or IAAT scores are recommended & places a student to reach Calculus in High School.) Opt-in’s are allowed in a single-acceleration.

Algebra: Double Year Accelerated or 8th Grade Math

(This course is a typical 8th grade math course or a double acceleration. Specific MAP and IAAT scores are required to be placed at this level & places a student on a track to reach Calculus in High School.) Opt-in’s are not allowed at this level.

SLIDE 50

Acceleration Pathways

  • Placement recommendation based on readiness – not potential. Look

for a letter from the district office in April or May

  • All classes align with college and career readiness
  • Think in terms of several years
  • Involve the student in the decision
  • When in doubt, keep them out
