COMMODORE’S REPORT
Welcome one and all. The Four Horsemen appear to have been warming up their act this year. Drought, Fire, Flood, Pestilence. Strange times indeed my friends. Manly Yacht Club has also been dragged kicking and screaming into the digital age. Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks have yet to see Bruce on a video conference. Yes, folks, it happened... strange times indeed. We hope for a return to full sailing in September. The return will depend a lot on the health advice but is likely to be a gradual easing of restrictions. Our sailing program will have to be adaptable to cope with this. If you have any ideas, please contact the Sailing Committee and we shall add it to the wish list. The sailing year has now drawn to a close, and we are here to digitally present the results to you. New methods all round. We would like to add a special welcome to all 33 new members this year, bringing our total numbers to 254 members. We are an all-volunteer club, so I would like to start with thanking our army of volunteers, ably
I would like to personally thank our major sponsors, Pepper Tree, Teusner, Quay Marine, DeVita, Seven Mile amongst others that provide an added incentive to getting around the course. This season we have had a great sailing program. We have put on:
and over 50 Yacht races. Congratulations to you all! Jason Bond - Commodore

MYC JUNIORS PROGRAM
Manly Yacht Club has followed the international sailing training standards by providing three levels of teaching. Levels 1 and 2 have been offered by Manly Sailing school and level 3 by the club’s green fleet. This season, the school offered level 3 to its students and this did reduce our student intake to the green fleet. However, may of the school’s level 3 students are expected to join the clubs race fleet for the coming season. Our green fleet was made up of 11 children and the Race Fleet 21 children. During the season a number of kids graduated from the Green fleet to the race fleet and this is always a big step for both parents and sailors. There were a number of changes this season. We appointed a paid Head Instructor. Lauren is a Canadian and studying in Australia on a student’s visa. She learnt to sail on the Great Lakes in North America and enjoyed her time in Sydney. She brought a level of professionalism to our fleets and has proved beyond doubt the need for a dedicated and experienced person to head up instruction of the junior fleet. Lauren was supported by 5 other instructors, three of who, Oliver, Vincent and Santo, are former MYC juniors. We have pensioned off the old Pittwater Juniors and replaced them with small rig Open Skiffs (formerly BICs). The new dinghies were funded by a consortium of enthusiastic members who want to see junior sailing thrive at Manly Yacht Club. Their introduction has reduced the amount of maintenance on the clubs sailing dinghies and given the children a better sailing experience. Half a dozen kids are becoming too big for Open Skiffs and approached the club to form a 4.7 Laser fleet. The club quickly moved to reorganize space and racks have been built ready for the fleet. Unfortunately, the Corona Virus got in the way and all junior sailing was abandoned, but the racks are there and ready for next season. We had the usual rough weather, particularly at the beginning of the season when some sailing days were abandoned, and attendance is always a problem with other sports, school and family activities intervening. However, our students have shown more dedication this season putting sailing ahead of other sports and pastimes. But overall the instructors have been pleased with the children’s progress and we hope next season’s race fleet will be larger while at the same time we expect a number of new recruits to the Green Fleet from the sailing school. Bruce Davis - Juniors
RACING FLEET
It was a crazy season for the Junior Racing Fleet. Notwithstanding COVID-19, we had weather extremes which caused abandonment
But the racing fleet members did enjoy themselves as we mixed up the courses and introduced some fun, non-traditional racing elements a bit this season that also tested their sailing skills. We had 32 juniors sail this season, with 21 participating in the racing. But, as you can see from the racing results, you’ve got to turn up for all the races to get yourself a place on the podium, especially so when the weather throws a tantrum. Five of eight Spring races and six of eight Autumn races were completed. The Mini regatta, consisting of 8 races, was successfully completed over 2 days, but the Club Championships were similarly struck by inclement weather and only 6 of the 10 races were completed. Harry Gill topped the leader board in all of the series with Oscar McLelland, Alex Todd, Ollie Ross, Ramon Berkovic and Ryan Lynch all jostling for positions. A few of the green fleet sailors stepped up to the racing fleet during the season, notably Macie Bourke and Danielle Chapman who both did well in what were often testing conditions this season. In November, MYC was represented at the NSW Open Skiff Championships at Mannering Park by 9 of our sailors. Known as the Dolphin Chaser Regatta, Harry Gill placed 3rd in the U13 Gold fleet. In the Silver fleet, Ramon also placed 3rd, with Charlie Snell placing 10th. Toby, Sophie, George, Macie, Jamie and Iggy all acquitted themselves well in a fleet of 31 sailors. Overall, we had a good mix of young sailors this season, with good active engagement from parents and effective co-ordination by Head Instructor, Lauren. Congratulations to not just those winners in each of those categories this season, but to all who participated and to their parents for doing the right thing and helping out with the roster requirements without which racing day would not function. I believe our sailors (and their parents) had a fantastic year and really enjoyed their time on the water, certainly from my
I’m sure the fleet look forward to a full season next time and will welcome any new racing participants. We have a really good spread of capability in the race fleet with means there is competition for all participants, including our developing sailors. Stuart Snell – Race Fleet

MYC LASER FLEET
With 23 boats on our start sheets and the majority turning up to race each week, it’s been a fun and competitive season. The ‘guns’ may finish well ahead of the slowest in the fleet, but everyone’s sailing faster, and our handicapping system ensures that if you race regularly, you’ll have a chance at a trophy. Our single-handed (and therefore self-isolating) Lasers lasted a week longer than the yachts and by swapping out a point score race, we managed to finish the Club Championship series. Ian Saunders has been striving for this top prize for many seasons and through a lot of extra regatta sailing, doing twilights with the yachts and hanging out with Evie’s coaches, he finally put it all together, snatching the lead on the last day. Well done Ian. He did the hard yards and triumphed. Congratulations must also go to Phil Reid for his close 2nd in the Club Championships and for also taking out the Annual Point Score Series. Ian can add the Spring Point Score to his showbag, and Gordon Lacey can swagger (as he does) away with the Autumn Points Score Series. Nice work. Thankfully, Iain Cameron (3rd in the Club Championships) didn’t finish the season empty handed, winning the season’s 4P Championship - thanks for all your off-water help Iain. Last but not least is Dutchy, who with his renowned stamina, has managed to excel in some really short races to take out the Micro Regatta. A feather in your cap Mr Holland. Thanks to everyone for chipping in on their duty day with the race committee and keeping us in beers and snacks to enjoy on those late summer afternoons on the deck. Stay safe everyone and hopefully we’ll be back on the water (and the deck) in the not-so-distanced future.
Geoff Reid - Lasers

MYC RACE MANAGEMENT
As we all know, MYC is a volunteer club and relies on the generosity of members in providing their time and effort on the various Series Race Committees throughout the season. Without your efforts, racing would not be possible and MYC would be a vastly different club to the one we all enjoy today. This past season has benefitted from many volunteers who were eager to be involved and also saw increased participation of members new to the workings of the race committee. You won’t be disappointed, there’s excitement and fun to be had each race. A warm thank you to all the people listed below and especially those of you who have volunteered
yet had the occasion to participate on the race committee from the water or the deck. We look forward to seeing you there!
