Our client is a leading foundation with USD 5 billion+ investments across 45 African countries, notably in health, agriculture, education and financial inclusion. The client requested a quick-turnaround assessment

  • f

the stakeholders, institutions and coordination mechanisms involved in the COVID-19 response in eight countries in West, Central and Southern Africa.

CHALLENGE

Africa Practice developed a replicable assessment matrix to identify and evaluate key stakeholders and institutions involved in each country’s response, as well the formal and informal coordination mechanisms between them. Given the novel and rapidly evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was scant information in the public domain. We were able to rapidly mobilise our extensive source networks to gain in-depth and nuanced insights into the inner workings of the institutional response to COVID-19 in each relevant country.

APPROACH

PAN-CONTINENTAL COVID-19 COORDINATION ASSESSMENT

We were able to deliver this assessment under significant time pressure to the client’s Africa executive team. We provided hyper-granular action-oriented insights with clear recommendations as to where the foundation could play a supporting role in improving coordination and efficiency, and providing technical

  • assistance. Our initial report comprised a

bespoke assessment matrix. The client’s Africa executive team is currently incorporating our recommendations into its multimillion dollar COVID-19 strategy for the continent.

Africa Practice was approached by a leading multinational technology firm to help the research and design of its pan-African initiative. The initiative sought to reposition the company by aligning it much more closely with Africa’s development priorities and building a more collaborative engagement tone amongst policy leaders and decision-makers in government. Ultimately, the objective was to build more trust, goodwill and influence in order to be more competitive in the rapidly evolving technology sector across Africa.

CHALLENGE

We developed a comprehensive stakeholder map, detailing key sector influencers, their agendas, political positioning and goals. Additionally, Africa Practice provided analysis

  • f

each government’s strategic priorities and identified potential areas of alignment to inform partnership opportunities. In line with the client’s wider strategic goals, we developed a full engagement strategy. We also established and managed an advisory board for the initiative, comprising academics and former government ministers.

APPROACH

PAN-CONTINENTAL REPOSITIONING AND EXPANSION

We supported the client’s stakeholder engagement process within its pan-continental repositioning initiative with active monitoring of political and policy developments likely to impact it and its objectives. Policy issues identified in the national policy review were continuously tracked and potential risk areas identified. Our annual stakeholder perception study also showed steady improvements in attitudes towards the client across multiple African markets.
