SANCOOP: 2013 -2017

  • NOK 40 mill. and ZAR 10 mill.
  • More policy-oriented:

The goal of the Programme is enhanced knowledge – based policies and decisions for sustainable development in the area of environment, climate change and clean energy in South Africa and Norway.

  • More targeted outcomes:
  • A more competent and gender balanced research workforce;
  • High quality knowledge relevant for the selected thematic areas;
  • Knowledge-based public awareness and debate.
  • But same beneficiaries as in previous programmes:
  • Researchers, postdoctoral candidates and postgraduate (Masters and

PhD) students in NO and SA;

  • Young researchers from historically disadvantaged backgrounds in SA;
  • Female researchers in both countries.
  • The research institutions where the researchers are attached.

Governing structure

  • Annual Meeting – Highest decision-making body,

composed by reps. of funders (MFA & DST)

  • Joint Committee (JC) – meets in Annual Meeting &

in Special Consultation Meetings according to need

  • International Committee (IC - new): Four

researchers from each country plus one from management of NRF & DST. Personal appointments

  • IC responsible for scientific recommendations on

proposals received and on progress & final reports

  • Secretariat: Composed by two coordinators from

NRF & RCN and support staff.

Rigorous assessment process for proposals

  • Call made jointly end of May 2013
  • Deadline for submission 4 September 2014
  • Used RCN electronic application system but with the

crucial requirement of attaching SA form

  • 59 applications received, 7 rejected, 52 processed
  • First assessment by at least two independent

referees identified by NRF & RCN, respectively

  • Scientific assessment and ranking by IC
  • Relevance assessment by Secretariat - special

emphasis: inclusion of hist. disadv. groups & gender

Allocations

  • Final decision on allocation of grants made by JC
  • 19 projects finally selected for funding
  • All projects completed (though some final reports

yet to be submitted)

  • As a result, no impact analysis made yet – we hope

to gather additional information from your presentations over the next two days

  • We may also solicit you assistance in the next few

weeks

  • We are in any case very happy that all 19 projects

are represented at the conference today
